9 Reasons Why RZA’s New Film Will Be A Masterpiece

Rza and Russell talking shop in American Gangster

It has just been announced that the RZA has landed himself Russell Crowe to play the lead in his directorial debut, The Man with the Iron Fist.  It is no surprise, given RZA’s love for almost all things kung-fu that his first feature would be an action one.  With that being said though, one shouldn’t write off this project as being just another action film, or another film involving a rapper-turned-actor destined for subpardom obscurity.

Being familiar with all of RZA’s musical output and having read his life changing self-help autobiography I can tell you that whatever this man puts out will have his entire soul in it and will turn out phenominal.

Here are 9 reasons why RZA’s new film will be a masterpiece.  And no, I am not making light of the word “masterpiece”, using it as some throwaway adjective to hype up a film.  I truely believe, that without seeing a single scene from this upcoming film that it will be “a creation that has been given much critical praise, especially one that is considered the greatest work of a person’s career or to a work of outstanding creativity, skill or workmanship.” – wikipedia’s definition of the word masterpiece.

Why 9 reasons, you might ask?  If you are already a fan of the Wu-Tang Clan (RZA’s group) then you already know the answer to that.  For those of you not familiar with the Wu, RZA is a big fan of numerology and the number 9 is one of great significance.  So on with the reasons, shall we?

Reason #1 The Man with the Iron Fist will be a masterpiece: RZA has worked with such talented directors as: Ridley Scott (American Gangster), Jim Jarmusch (Ghost Dog, Coffee and Cigarettes), Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill) and Paul Haggis (The Next Three Days).  Surely he must have picked up a trick or two working with these guys.

Reason #2 The Man with the Iron Fist will be a masterpiece: The man is a chess enthusiast, which means he is always thinking ahead and foreseeing outcomes.  honing in on that ability often leads to success.  Who else in the film industry was a great chess player?  How about a guy named Stanley Kubrick.  You might know him from his little films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Dr. Strangelove, Full Metal Jacket, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, etc.

Reason #3 The Man with the Iron Fist will be a masterpiece RZA is an avid fan of kung-fu films and takes them very seriously.  He is able to read into them and find multiple qualities and layers of meaning that are within the subtext of your “average” punch, punch, kick, kick kung-fu flick.  With that being said, there is no reason why he will not handle this film maturely.  The man knows his material.

Reason #4 The Man with the Iron Fist will be a masterpiece: Russell Crowe.  Dude won an Oscar.  Not that winning an Oscar automatically makes you a great actor, but c’mon, when the guy has his A-game on he’s a goddamn beast of an actor!

Reason #5 The Man with the Iron Fist will be a masterpiece: Maybe I should have mentioned this earlier in the post, but Quentin Tarantino is listed as one of the producers.  With the Hollywood handbag that Tarantino has to dip his paws into and the expertise he has behind the camera his mentoring to the RZA could only serve as a positive.

Reason #6 The Man with the Iron Fist will be a masterpiece: RZA is a perfectionist in every branch of art that he performs, so why would directing be any different?  He has proven with his songs and writings that he has a clear understanding of how to tell a story and create structure.

Reason #7 The Man with the Iron Fist will be a masterpiece: If his capturing of motion pictures is as clear as his ability to conjure up a moving picture in my head while listening to his lyrics, than this film is sure to be a success. (See lyrics at bottom of post)

Reason #8 The Man with the Iron Fist will be a masterpiece: Being able to direct and album with various different personalities is no easy feat, but it is a feat that RZA has done time and time again with various degrees of success.  At his best he has brought the world such classic albums as Enter The Wu, Forever and 6 Feet Deep.  Hopefully his musical directing and arranging experience will translate to the silver screen.

Reason #9 The Man with the Iron Fist will be a masterpiece:  He is the RZA, nuff said.

And now as a further example of the talented RZA, here is a verse he wrote for his song, See the Joy.  Tell me this wouldn’t make for a good short film.

My mind flashed back to the early moon
When I was just a sperm cell in the fallopian tube
In the mist of a state of triple darkness
Going through a struggle so I could exist
Avoiding everything that came within my path
As I watch other sperm cells get ripped in half
One out of a million completes the job
And for the other sperm cells the womb is a grave yard
Though my travels I had to pass through
Alot of battles and violent hassles
Cause inside the womb I was a foreign object
I’m like a new nigga walking through the project
Trouble, everywhere I turn
Damn its a struggle just being a sperm
cell, so I attempt to prevail
I guess the womb is the first stage of hell
Now here I am in the danger zone
My head and my tail, my 23 chromosomes
But then again yo it can’t be that bad cause my dad
He could have used a body bag
And if so then my tomb would have been the trash can inside my moms bedroom
But they was fucking, they was true to this
And here a go on a mission to the uterus
A million mother fuckers tried to race ahead
But I was the one that fertilized the egg
Then I thought then I was safe
Because I reached home base
But oh no my job wasn’t done
In fact my troubles had only begun life as a struggle
Life is the struggle
