Berlin & Beyond Film Festival 2010: In The Shadows – Review And Trailer

In The Shadows is a short and sweet look into the life of a career criminal.  Trojan, a 40 or so year old man, has just gotten out of the pen.  Knowing nothing else, he immediately starts getting back into the armed robbery game. The only problem is he is being watched by a very dedicated police officer.

The story unfolds slowly, drawing us into the characters lives. When motives become more clear, the calm game of cat and mouse turns into a fight for survival.

Director Thomas Arslan‘s film is not a thrill packed shoot ’em up movie, but a meditation on the criminal lifestyle.  The film uses familiar settings and known images to build our expectations, and slowly absorbs us in its world. Pulling us into the plot more effectively than hours of back story could ever do is the presentation of the characters going through there daily motions. The film never strays from its goal and stays intriguing without shoving personal drama down viewers throats. It’s about the blueprints and execution of a crime.

With smart directing and great acting In The Shadows is a refreshing take on the crime genre.

Just curious. I see you gave this film 4 stars and that you also gave Hot Tub Time Machine 4 stars. Is this not as good as Hot Tub Time Machine?
