New Italian Cinema Film Festival 2010: I Am Glad You Are Here – Review and Trailer

What started out as a potentially interesting character study of two women bound together by their love for the same man turned into a very uninteresting and overly ambitious chick flick. (note to reader: I have been known to enjoy “chick flicks” from time-to-time, but not this one)

Meno male che ci sei (I Am Glad You Are Here) is the story of a 17-year-old left on her own after her parents die in a plane crash.  She soon moves in with her father’s mistress and together, through a contrived plot development covering every theme you have ever seen in every single Lifetime Chanel movie, begin their relationship of feminine supportive empowerment.

Pregnancy, sex with a minor, date rape, fist fights, car crashes, affairs, and even that most overused attempt at a laugh with a man fainting at the bedside of a woman giving birth.  All of this and much more were unabashedly on display for all to be disgusted by.  Don’t even get me started on the uninspired stylistic choice to use whiney indie rock over slow-motion shots to emphasise the supposedly emotional moments.

Okay, I did give this film two stars (an average rating) so it couldn’t be all that bad, right?  Well, had it not been for the lead actors’ fantastic acting, and a brief mention of Dario Argento‘s classic film, Four Flies On Grey Velvet, I’m not so sure I would have been able to give this film much more than a flimsy paper star.  Both Claudia Gerini and Chiara Martegiani are clearly doing their best to keep this mess of a film as tidy as they can.
