Next Up On The Hollywood Remix Wheel Of Shame: Martyrs

Oh for gods sake Hollywood, you think you would have learned by now that remaking an already popular horror film will not be an easy cash grab.  A Tale of Two Sisters was horribly remade into The Uninvited, as was The Eye, Juon, and countless others.  And even when the film is done well, like in the most recent case of Let Me In‘s re-imagining of the superb Swedish film Let The Right One In, it doesn’t guarantee people will pay to see it.  The english version of Let The Right One In, while critically acclaimed (89% rating on RottenTomatoes.com) still failed to take the number one spot at the box office with many horror fans, myself included, who haven’t even seen it yet.

Well horror fans, with all that being said, get ready for some truly horrifying news.

It has recently been reported that the latest horror film to get the American remake facelift will be Pascal Laugier‘s 2008 brilliant, Martyrs.  And yes, judging from my use of the adjective, “brilliant”, I am a big fan of the original.  Martyrs was a refreshing gore-filled blend of horror sub-genres with a sci-fi twist that stayed with me for weeks after first seeing it.  The thinking man’s/woman’s little gore treat, if you will.

Now, Daniel Stamm (director of The Last Exorcism) has been chosen to direct the remake and has gone on the record of saying, “The American approach [that I’m looking at] would go through all that darkness but then give a glimmer of hope. You don’t have to shoot yourself when it’s over.”

Well, if ever a quote from a director was going to make me purchase a movie ticket, this was not it.  Am I alone in thinking what a horrible statement this is to make about a film whose entire appeal and controversy lies in the torment and darkness that each viewer has to go through in order to fully grasp the science-fictionalized ideology that makes Martyrs the fantastic film that it is?  The skeptic in me thinks this one will be a dud, and that they’ll ruin the already perfect ending, but who knows, I hope I am wrong and are able to like both versions.
