SFIFF 2011: The Late Show Overview – “Outrage”, “The Selling”, “Stake Land”, “The Troll Hunter”

One of my favorite parts of the SFIFF is The Late Show.  Last year at the festival I was lucky enough to catch the Aussie horror flick, The Loved Ones, which turned out to be one of my top 10 films of the year.  This year SFIFF is once again delivering what looks to be an awesome lineup of late night gore/humor with Outrage, The Selling, Stake Land, and The Troll Hunter.

Mini reviews for all 4 of the films playing in The Late Show can be found after the jump

Outrage is the only film from The Late Show we have not yet seen but we will be attending it at the festival with high hopes.  Director Takeshi Kitano returns to the Gangster genre with what is sure to be a bleak, nihilistic, yet probably slightly humorous look at a yokuza gang war.  Apparently there is a hard to forget scene that involves a dentist chair so those of you who already fear getting the drill might want to stay away.

Outrage showtimes:

The Selling is a genuinely funny and intelligently written horror comedy with a nice amount of suspense.  Written and starred-in by up-and-coming local Gabriel Diani.  A young real estate seller attempts to sell a haunted house, to naturally disastrous results.  See it!

The Selling Showtimes:

FRIDAY APRIL 29th 11:30pm KABUKI

Stake Land is a vampire/zombie apocalypse film.  It is extremely fun although at times I wished it would have made up its mind about being a horror film or an action film.  Either way it had plenty of scares and gore to entertain the zombie crowd.

Stake Land showtimes:

FRIDAY APRIL 22nd 11:30pm KABUKI

The Troll Hunter is the major stand out of The Late Show so far.  I admit to not having a vast knowledge of Norwegian films but this documentary style horror/adventure/comedy blew me away.  The film focuses on a group of film students who stumble upon a secret government war against the Trolls.  The troll hunter himself is a one man army and disgruntled government employee (think DMV clerk that kills trolls) who agrees to let the filmmakers follow him, as long as they stay out of his way and are not Christian (trolls can smell a Christian from miles away).  Together they end up on frightening and ridiculous hunting trips involving trolls of all different shapes and sizes.  This is an intelligent and witty movie that restored my confidence in the “shaky cam” horror genre.
