Announcing The Studio Ghibli Animation Film Festival

If you wait around long enough chances are that every month or so you’ll find one of Studio Ghibli’s films playing at a San Francisco theatre.  Hopefully, your schedule for that day will be cleared and you’ll be able to get that big screen anime fix of yours on properly.  Thankfully, this September, our golden city has a film festival heading our way to highlight the best that Studio Ghibli has to offer so you don’t have to wait (im)patiently for one of our amazing theatres to show a special print.  Films such as Hayao Miyazaki‘s Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, Ponyo, and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind are just a few highlights that can be seen at the fest.  Did I mention that there will be brand spanking new 35mm prints?  Oh, rapture!

Now this may be hard to believe, but I actually know of some anime fans who do not enjoy the work of Miyazaki, nor can they appreciate his masterpieces.  Hard to believe, right?  Well, Miyazaki haters – and you know who you are – the good news is that not all the films at this festival are by Miyazaki.  Surely at least one film by Isao Takahata (Pom Poko, Only Yesterday, My Neighbors the Yamadas), Hiroyuki Morita (The Cat Returns), or Yoshifumi Kondo (Whisper of the Heart) will appeal to these said Miyazaki haters.  I, for one, having only seen one of these movies (shame on me, I know) plan on attending as many screenings as my schedule will allow.

The Studio Ghibli Film Festival plays at Landmark’s Bridge Theatre from September 7th to the 13th before moving to the East Bay at Berkeley’s Landmark Theatre from September 14th to the 26th.
