Rock’s Report From The 58th SF Intl Film Festival: Tetsuya Nakashima’s “The World of Kanako”

The_World_of_Kanako_01#chooseyourweapon and man did this film do just that. Tetsuya Nakashima latest movie is a gritty noir about a father searching and attempting to rescue his daughter. Liam Neeson and Taken this is not. Matter of fact, don’t go into this film with suppositions of basically anything. The World of Kanako is a funky blast of male machismo, and quite frankly it is a helluva ride that doesn’t let up until the last frame.

Now I must say that how the film deals with the taboo subject matter of an underbelly world is without kid gloves. This movie, like so many Japanese (Asian) films, pushes the envelope quite far and it pains my heart that we in this country have not caught up to the standards of frankness and openness of the violent lives which we fetish over and lead, but rather we shy away from it. This is a movie that delivers blood, bullets, and sex by the boatload, but does so while questioning absolute morality, which I was expecting when I got on this ride.

If you want action, comedy (dark and slapstick), a dash of drama, old school funk, and a mean muscle car set against a picturesque urban landscape then go see this film. If dark subject matter upsets you then don’t, please don’t see this movie. As a filmmaker myself I can’t recommend this film enough, I can talk technique in another review (love the title sequence) but yeah, this is top notch and met all expectations, and then some.

title sequence was definitely the highpoint of the movie. loved the style, but i was actually hoping to be more scandalized and shocked.

Pepito having your daughter be a drug abusing pimp of underage children wasn’t enough for you, we should hang out…
